McCall OUtdoor Science school

February 2012

Science came alive for the 5th and 6th graders the last week of February 2012!  Our students had the opportunityscience school for St. Mary's students to experience an unforgettable “hands-on” science camp. The classes were able to go for 5 days to the MOSS (McCall Outdoor Science School) campus to learn about the local ecosystem, animal adaptations, snow science and local atmospheric conditions/climate.

Students interacted in small learning groups, led by University of Idaho graduate students. The students applied the Scientific Method by experimenting and then creating a power point presentation explaining their hypothesis, data collection and conclusions from the experiments each group developed.

The students also learned the 5 “C”s: communication, collaboration, caring, connection and cooperation, which enabled them to work in their small groups and room together in close quarters effectively.

This was a wonderful and memorable opportunity for our St. Mary’s students.

Hallissey Invitational Championships

February 2012

St. Mary’s 7th and 8th grade classes participated in the 49th Annual Hallissey Invitational, a statewide Catholic schools basketball tournament, for all 7th and 8th students, on February 17-19, 2012.  This friendly competition is about good sportsmanship,  bonding with classmates and making new friends.  St. Mary’s has participated in this event for many years.

We started off the Hallissey weekend by celebrating with a fun, all-school pep assembly! The first rounds of bracket play started Friday evening and continued throughout Saturday. We traveled between 7 different local gymnasiums supporting all three of our teams - 7th grade co-ed, 8th grade boys and 8th grade girls.

We ended bracket play Saturday afternoon and then celebrated evening Mass, followed by a dance for all of the players.

On Sunday, our 8th grade boys and girls teams progressed through the Championship side of the bracket.  Our 8th grade boys placed third and our 8th grade girls won the Championship!

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS' WEEK ESSAYS DEFINE STUDENTS PERCEPTION OF EDUCATION

January 29 - February 5, 2012

A wise man once said, "The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. But the great teacher inspires.” I feel that all the teachers at St. Mary’s are great for they inspire me to learn every day.

They not only teach us science, grammar, and all the other educational subjects, but also life lessons. The teachers have taught us the importance of loving your enemies as well as your neighbors, working hard to achieve goals, and giving to the less fortunate, etc. They not only teach us to love, help, trust, give, and learn by the things they say, but also by the things they do.

Megan Pape Awarded The Humanitarian Scholarship

$1,300.00 provided by Sterling Landscape for Bishop Kelly High School
December 2011

What words could accurately describe a student that not only personifies the qualities sought by their school,St. Marys School scholarship student but outwardly follows these actions with no thought other than this is what a normal person should do? You could list many traits to fit this  description. Words in this case could not do justice of what a quality person Megan Pape actually is. If I were to narrow the list down I would have to mention how Megan constantly volunteers her time to anyone in need. She is a friend to anyone that needs one, or even comfort to others. Megan is a quiet leader. She does not look for recognition, but it is easy to see when she is involved in a project. Many people look to her for help, and she is more than willing to give it. Overall, Megan is there. She is always looking for her time to quietly shine, but she will never admit that she wants anyone to notice that shine. Megan does not want the attention, but at some time the acknowledgment of her good work needs to be established. Megan is a good friend, a good artist, a good student, a good leader, a good person, a humanitarian.

The winning essay by Nicole Ceperich:

Flags Of My Family
Being young, it’s not always easy to understand what it means to live in a free country. In my family my father, grandfather, and both my great grandfathers, served in combat in the United States Military defending that freedom.

One of my great grandfathers who was a part of my life for nine years, served in WWII during the invasion of Normandy. I had the opportunity to attend his funeral which was at the Veteran’s Cemetery in Boise. Watching the military color guard at the service as they folded the United States flag was very touching. I didn’t really understand what it meant until I asked my father. He told me that it was to honor the life of a person who gave their life, or part of their life, in defending our country. As I see both of my great grandfather’s flags displayed in my home, I feel the honor that they must have had in serving for each one of us. I am very thankful for a father, who teaches me to love our country and to honor those who have lost their lives defending it.
