Music Expectations & Grading

GENERAL MUSIC EXPECTATIONS:

In music, you (students) are expected to…

  1. Do all things in a respectful way.
  2. Listen to and follow instructions the first time they are given.
  3. Give your best positive effort every time.
  4. Raise your hand, and wait until called upon, to share questions and comments.
  5. Clean up after yourself.
  6. Refrain from consuming food/beverages/gum during music. (Water is OK!)

NATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR MUSIC EDUCATION STANDARDS:

In order to ensure that students receive a high quality music education, we align our lessons with both of the following:

-The Idaho Fine Arts Standards for Music (2015)

-The Core Music Standards (2014) from the National Association for Music Education

Respect

Student has chronically disruptive behavior, and/or actively mistreats classmates and the instructor.

Student treats classmates and instructor in a way that is appropriate, unobtrusive, constructive, and positive at all times.

In-class Effort

Student responds to instructions after the 3rd or 4th time they are given; OR not at all.

Student slowly responds to instructions most of the time.

Student swiftly responds to instructions most of the time.

Student swiftly responds to instructions the first time they are given, every time.

Content Knowledge

(Rhythms, Solfege, Song Retention)

Student is unable to demonstrate knowledge of musical concepts long after they have been presented and practiced (five or six classes).

Student demonstrates knowledge of musical concepts, with many errors, after three or four classes of concepts being presented.

Student demonstrates knowledge of musical concepts, with very few or no errors, within three or four classes of concepts being presented

OR

Demonstrates knowledge with many errors, within one or two classes.

Student demonstrates knowledge of musical concepts, with very few or no errors, within one or two classes of concepts being presented.

4th GRADE:

In addition to their Work Habits grade, students will also earn points based on their study and performance on the recorder, small written assignments, and on whether or not they participate in their special program performance.

5th GRADE:

In addition to their Work Habits grade, students will also earn points for their daily music notebook entries, notebook quizzes, small written assignments, and on whether or not they participate in their special program performance.

6th GRADE:

In addition to their Work Habits grade, students will also earn points based on their daily music notebook entries, notebooks quizzes, small written assignments, homemade instrument projects, and whether or not they participate in their special program performance.
